A Garden in Stone: The Ornate Entrance of Modernist Barcelona
Monochrome photography from Barcelona in Spain
The entrances to residential buildings in Barcelona’s Eixample were often treated as monuments themselves, fusing architectural function with exquisite artistry. This photograph captures a stunning example of a Modernist doorway, heavily adorned with naturalistic sculpture.
The composition is dominated by the monumental entrance, framed by two robust, fluted stone columns that feature bands of delicate floral carving at their bases and capitals. The heavy wooden double doors are set back, creating a sense of privacy and grandeur.
Above the doorway, the most striking feature is the balcony support system. Massive, curved stone brackets hold up the balcony floor, which is itself decorated with deep relief carvings of leaves and flowers. The balcony railing above is made of a continuous carved stone slab, featuring repeated, almost abstract floral patterns that give the impression of a perpetually blooming stone garden.
The black and white processing accentuates the depth and shadow of the carvings, highlighting the three-dimensionality of the artwork. Details like the small “115” address number and the presence of contemporary shop fronts (Mini-empanadas) hint at the building’s continuous, living history in Barcelona’s bustling urban centre. This entrance is a powerful reminder that in Catalan Modernism, the threshold between the street and home was a space of profound beauty.
