Above the Trees: The Ornamented Poetry of Catalan Modernism
Monochrome photography from Barcelona in Spain
Barcelona’s streets are lined with architecture that demands constant attention, even above the treeline. This photograph captures the beautiful complexity of a typical, yet extraordinary, Modernist residential building. The dense foliage in the foreground provides a natural frame, making the ornate façade feel like a secret glimpsed through the leaves.
The focus is drawn to the meticulous detail of the upper floors. The balconies feature exquisite wrought-iron railings, which curve and flow like woven metal ribbons—a signature of the era. These elements transform functional balconies into works of art nouveau sculpture. Above the windows, subtle stone carvings and crests add visual interest, breaking the linearity of the design.
In the stark black and white, the contrasting textures are powerful: the soft, dappled light on the foreground leaves meets the hard, rhythmic pattern of the ironwork. Most compellingly, the rooftop features a hidden sanctuary: the outline of rooftop gardens and terrace plants, a small slice of Mediterranean oasis crowning the stone structure.
This image beautifully illustrates the core tenets of Catalan Modernism: a seamless blend of natural elements (the leaves, the rooftop greenery, the flowing iron) with solid, structured craftsmanship. It’s a moment that reminds us that in Barcelona, even the most everyday apartment building is an architectural masterpiece.
