Shadows and Stories: Finding Drama at Casa Amatller
Monochrome photography from Barcelona in Spain
When walking the famous Illa de la Discòrdia (Block of Discord) in Barcelona, it’s easy to lose yourself entirely in the swirling colours and organic forms of Gaudí’s masterpiece next door. But to do so is to miss the profound, layered drama of the Casa Amatller.
This photograph, rendered in high-contrast black and white, highlights the building’s own powerful voice, which speaks a different language than its neighbours. Designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the Casa Amatller is a breathtaking fusion of Catalan Modernisme with strong elements of Gothic Revival.
Look closely: the façade is a tapestry of intricate tiles, geometric patterns, and fantastical stonework. The light and shadow play across the surface, turning the building into a living, breathing sculpture. The ironwork of the balcony, a spine of elegant, curving metal, juts out, providing a dramatic leading line that draws the eye into the depths of the structure and up toward the swirling sky.
This angle perfectly captures the interplay between the two dominant styles: the smooth, almost flat surface of the patterned walls meets the exploding three-dimensional details around the windows and balconies. It’s a magnificent testament to a time when architects were competing to create the most imaginative and awe-inspiring urban art. It proves that in Barcelona, true beauty is not always the loudest, but often the most richly detailed.
